China: North America Vulnerable to Balloon Surveillance Capabilities

Updated: Feb 13

The North American continent is likely vulnerable to continued surveillance and collection by the Chinese government due to China’s deployment of multiple surveillance balloons. These balloons have increased image clarity and frequency compared to surveillance satellite capabilities. The American public observed a balloon-like device traveling through Alaska, Idaho, Missouri, and South Carolina beginning on 01 February 2023. However, the U.S. government first detected the balloon and its payload on 28 January 2023 as it entered U.S. airspace over the Aleutian Islands. The U.S. government confirmed the device was a People’s Republic of China (PRC) surveillance tool which justified its safe removal by the U.S. Air Force on 04 February 2023. The U.S. government has also confirmed the PRC has previously sent up to five undetected surveillance balloons over Guam, Hawaii, Texas, and Florida., As of 09 Feb 2023, the U.S. government determined with a high degree of confidence that a connection exists between the device and the People’s Liberation Army.
