Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are an emerging technology in both the military and civilian world. MEMS is a broad term that can encompass several different technologies and is generally divided into four categories: microsensors, micro-actuators, microelectronics, and microstructures. In this paper, MEMS will refer almost exclusively to microscopic sensors. MEMS sensors can be utilized in cameras, biological monitoring devices, chemical analysis, and even the creation of facial recognition databases. However, MEMS offer a much greater intelligence potential: through-wall sensing, detecting hidden rooms, and identifying explosive materials and sources. MEMS could provide a comparative advantage over potential adversaries in the future.
