Uncontrolled Social Media Sites: Vectors for Misinformation

Social media has enabled widespread communication and connection between individuals around the world, and has been credited with enabling some of the most influential events of the 21st century such as the Bronze Night in Estonia or the Arab Spring. US adversaries across the world have quickly picked up on how influential such platforms could be and how to weaponize them for nefarious purposes to the point that the US House Intelligence Committee dedicated a nearly 1000- page report to Russian interference in the 2016 election alone3. Misinformation and the use of deceptive information for warfare practices is not something new, but is enabled thanks to the new inter-connectivity the internet provides. After the Russians saw the effectiveness of their methods in the 2016 US Presidential election, interference was utilized in other elections such as the 2019 Ukrainian election that brought Volodymyr Zelensky to power.
